Types of Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers have changed - These aren't your grandmothers diapers baby! While flats, prefolds and plastic pants are still around and often used, there is so much more selection in styles and fabrics, it could make your head spin. Here's a breakdown in hopes to help you stop spinning. :)

Flats*: The most primitive of diapers. A flat rectangle of cotton, folded to slew of oragamy like ways. These are very affordable a quick drying.

Prefolds*: More rectangles of fabric to fold. These are broken down into 3 sections, the center being the most absorbent with more layers. These still require pins but are still fairly quick drying and afforable.

Fitteds*: Hourglass shaped with elastic around the legs and back (sometimes also in front). These fasten with aplix (velcro) or snaps in front or on the side.

Pockets: Consist of a waterproof outer layer and a stay dry inner layer. These have an opening to stuff with inserts/absorbant fabric. These are quick drying most times can be hung dry in a couple of hours, inserts may require more time depending on layers and fabric. These fasten with aplix (velcro) or snaps in front or on the side.

All-in-Ones: Just what the name says. Usually a waterproof outer layer, and stay dry inner layer with a soaker(absorbent) layers of fabric sewn between. These are fast and easy but can take a realtively longer time drying. These fasten with aplix (velcro) or snaps in front or on the side.

All-in-2: Similar to All-in-Ones but the absorbent layers are snapped in or sewn above the inner layer of fabric, making them faster drying. These fasten with aplix (velcro) or snaps in front or on the side.

Covers: Made from a multitude of materials nowdays. Fabric laminated with Polyuerthane Laminate is a popular choice. Can be found in solid colors or cute prints. Wool and fleece are popular choices as well. They are both breathable materials. Wool absorbs urine while retaining a dry feeling to the touch, as well as being naturally antibacterial. Fleece is water proof and holds in leaks.
